Starting a successful business in the UK can be quite challenging, especially with the set of rules or regulations the government imposes on certain industries in addition to the many problems small business owners have to solve in order to keep their operation alive and profitable.
The most basic step in order to start a successful business is to have a good business plan, if you have an idea of the type of business that you want to develop it is important that you realize that you don't yet have something that can be considered a business plan, while the business idea is important you will soon find that several financing institutions will ask you for a business plan in order to lend you the capital needed to put that idea on wheels.

In order to create a good business plan you need to take your time, sit down and start writing who your target market is (demographics and such), you should also mention the type of product or service that you will be offering and how that particular product will be marketed. Having a good plan can give you an idea of the many obstacles you will have to overcome and how you can better prepare yourself in order to take on these problems.
Thinking of a good business idea and writing a plan that can later one be turned into a successful operation can be quite hard for most entrepreneurs, this is a difficult fact to accept but if you take a look at the number of businesses that are started and how many survive the first few years you will soon realize that in order for your business to survive you need to have a really good plan. Fortunately, those who don't want to start a business without knowing whether or not it'll be successful have yet another option; they can start a franchise business.
Unlike traditional start up businesses, a franchise is an established operation that has a track record of success, the person (or party) who decides to purchase the rights to start a franchise from the franchisor will have somewhat of an unfair advantage over people who are starting fresh, this is because the business plan has already been laid out and has the franchisor can prove, the business idea works as long as the basic principles of the franchise are followed.
Yes, a franchise will require a sizable upfront investment in order to get things going but the benefits of owning a franchise and knowing that the business plan is guaranteed to generate revenues far out weights any business idea you may have. The bottom line with franchises is that you are investing and starting a successful business that you can use to generate revenue which later one can be used to finance any other business idea you may have.
